How to Get Started Working for California

California has a merit-based civil service selection system. This ensures the state hires and promotes people based on job-related qualifications. Before you can work for the state, you need to take and pass an examination for the specific job classification.

There are two types of examinations: Open and Promotional.

  • Open examinations are open to anyone meeting the minimum qualifications listed on the exam bulletin for the classification regardless of their current place of employment.
  • Promotional examinations are limited to current or recent California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) employees with permanent status who meet the minimum qualifications listed on the exam bulletin for the classification.

You can find available CDTFA exam bulletins on the calcareers webpage. If a classification isn't listed, then an exam for that classification isn't currently available. Read the job bulletin to see the qualifications needed. Exam bulletins contain salary information, minimum qualifications, and application instructions. Instructions vary so it's important to read each bulletin carefully.

If you are interested and meet the qualifications, begin the assessment. After completing the examination, candidates receive a final score and are placed on the eligibility list. Once you pass the exam, you are eligible to start applying!
