Classes for Cigarette and Tobacco Product Retailers

Classroom

Did you know you can schedule a free onsite CDTFA Tobacco Class for your organization or group?

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) offers free classes for retailers who sell or plan to sell cigarettes or tobacco products in California (includes "vaping" products containing nicotine). This class is designed to inform, answer questions, and help retailers understand the state's requirements and their responsibilities as a vendor of tobacco products in California. During the class we will cover topics such as:

  • Who must be licensed
  • Sales of electronic smoking (vaping) devices such as eCigarettes
  • What to expect during a CDTFA inspection
  • What records you must maintain at your business location
  • What violations can result in the seizure of your products
  • Recent changes in law that may affect your sales of tobacco products
  • What rights you have as a taxpayer, and much more…

These classes are offered at local CDTFA Offices throughout the state. Classes are scheduled when a minimum class registration is reached for any one of the CDTFA locations shown below; so don't forget to preregister. Once the class is scheduled, each person preregistered for that location will be contacted with the class date, time and address. A CDTFA certificate of completion is offered to those attending any one of these instructor-led classes.

You can preregister online for a class by using the "Register" links below for any of the locations shown or you can call 1-916-322-8536 to register or for more information. If you would like to have a free tobacco class conducted solely for your organization, you may contact the CDTFA at 1-916-323-4088 to make arrangements or email your request to mdaprato@cdtfa.ca.gov.

If you are unable to attend an instructor-led class, you may review the class information online at Cigarettes and Tobacco Products Online Seminar for Retailers. The information provided in this tutorial is similar to that covered by instructor in the class. The online tutorial is available in multiple languages and also allows you to submit your questions to the CDTFA by email.
